Get Involved!

This year we have(The Holy Spirit) inspired a Homeless outreach in which one Sunday a month we set out to provide food(sack lunch) water, clothes, and we pray for folks.  In the last four months, we have come across numerous homeless folks.  We have even have had one of the homeless folks(vernon) share his faith story.  We have the opportunity to look beyond ourselves to see others through the eyes of Jesus.  We set out downtown from 14th and Broadway to the River Market area, and look for folks who need some help.  It is really seek and find mission experience.  It is our hope that it will continue to throughout the year.  We have had financial donations, and many clothes donated. We really feel that God has made a difference within this outreach.  This will enable you to get the feel of what a Mission Trip in the summer may feel like.

We also have the opportunity to be involved with Grace Community Church during the year.  We are involved with them at Thanksgiving and at Christmas.  This downtown Church assists with folks in the area of 8th and Benton in KC, MO.  They provide food at Thanksgiving and provide much more at Christmas.  It is an experience that will leave you feeling much love and how maybe God can continue to work though you in your everyday life.

We also have a relationship with Grandview Park in KC, Kansas.  It has grown from mission to more of a friendship with the families within the Church.  We hope to be involved with their Youth Group and their Church once a month.  We hope these experiences expand how Jesus works in your life, and enables you to see beyond your own life.

This years theme for the Mission trip is really two fold.  We are using the word Sankofa. This is an African proverb that means learning from our past to make progress in our current life.  It is when we are able to move forward that we live out 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! The High School will be going to of New York City to work with The Dream Center of New York http://www.dreamcenter.org/NYDC/index.html .  We will be working all over New York as the Dream Center designs each day.  You will have an amazing experience being involved with a variety of people of New York.  There are only 50 spots!  The dates are June 12th-June 20th. You will need to get your forms quickly to have a spot.  The reason is that the Church only has room for 50.  This is the reason for limited space.  We are staying at Manhattan Presbyterian Church.  We also are flying to New York.  The forms are available under the downloads and then to the trip section.

The Junior High will travel to St.Louis July 25th-July 30th.  We will be working throughout St.Louis working with children, food pantries, and assisting the elderly with their homes.  We will also be visiting Six Flags over St. Louis. You really don't want to miss the JH Mission Trip.  This trip is for 6th-8th graders.  And friends are always welcome! The forms will be available online very soon.

Our other student opportunity is Camp Barnabas, July 14-July 21st.  This camps focuses on students with medical challenges. The week we go is the week of campers with burns, cance, and diabetes.  All of 3 of these experiences allow students to grow in their friendships, their faith, and become better connected to the larger Church. We have had the opportunity to go the last 8 years.  This year is already filled, and we have waiting list right now.  This is really a camp that serves the camper, and involves having heart for those with special needs.  Check out the website and you will have a better idea what it is like www.campbarnabas.org

Each year our student ministry is filled with a variety of experiences: Mission experiences, worship experiences, laughter, and tears at times.  It is our hope that  Junior High and High School students become better connected to our Church, each other, and their faith.  We offer a variety of opportunities to become connected: Sunday Mornings (Sunday School), Sunday afternoon( Youth Group), Wednesday Nights (Youth Group), Mission Trips (JH and HS) Ski Trip (All ages), Tubing Trip (JH experience), Retreats (all ages), Local Mission, concerts, worship experiences, snow football, fundraisers, Mexico Mission Trip ( Soph and beyond), prayer, and lasting friendships.  It is through these experiences that we hope students form lifetime friendships.  We hope that our Church Mission statement comes to life  To know Christ and make Him known.  It usually take a first step and then making these Youth experiences a regular part of their schedule.

The activities and topics this year are planned to enable you to hear the voice of God calling out your name. You are part of the Body of Christ (by being a Christian), and you’re part of the youth family that gathers Sundays and Wednesdays at Presbyterian Church of Stanley. Whether it’s your one thousandth time in The Cave or your first time—we want you to join us! A family is made up of a variety of people and the body of Christ is not a cookie cutter formula. We too have a variety of people!

We want you! God always has a way in which He uses us, and you may have the opportunity to impact someone's life. Maybe this is the year that you take the chance to expand your faith and join us in The Cave!

We hope throughout this year that your personal testimony will be better defined or even impacted by the things we do as a group and as individuals. What is a testimony? It’s the story of God as told and experienced in and through your life. We all have testimony, and each one is shaped a little different. Perhaps this is the year that you are able to verbally communicate your testimony or even write it down. You’ll have a variety of opportunities to dive headlong into different faith experiences!

We will be communicating about activities, meetings, events and more via email throughout the year. If you want to keep current on what’s happening with your youth, email Harlan and give him your email address. You’ll get the latest information about what’s happening!

Remember—you can call the Youth Hotline at 913-851-7725 ext. 39* for updates on what’s happening! During inclement weather call 913-681-8181 ext. 50 to see if an event is cancelled. Please note that when dialing the Youth Hotline (depending on your phone) you may or may not need to push the # (pound) key after the 39. If it doesn’t work one way—try the other and you should be able to access the hot line.
