Are you hungry?Posted by Harlan Harper in myblog |

On Wednesday night 6/1/09 4 of us set out to show a little of the love of Jesus in downtown KC. We could of stayed home and facebooked or played PS2 or went to a movie or even flipped channels. But instead we had the idea of making sandwiches and getting some fruit and water and handing it out Wednesday night for God's guys. What a remarkable experience the four of us had Wednesday night. We came into contact with guys named Sonny, Bobby and Robert. We were not sure what was going to happen with this experience, but we thought with God's help we will findpeople who need some help. And we did! We drove all over downtown KC looking for the homeless, and we found plenty. We found some folks down by the river, under an overpass, and even in the bushes of downtown KC. We would simply yell anyone hungry or thirsty? And we did come across people who had those needs. We were thankful that there was just 4 of us because any more than that we would probably overwhelmed who we were serving.
There are two funny stories. We were driving by the railroad tracks, and there was this wooded area to our left, and we all thought that this would be a great place for a homeless person. We saw trails and spots that a person could climb and find a place to live. So we stopped, and went to one of the trails and climbed and yelled"anyone here?" Not really expecting to hear anything back...out pops an older guy and says " Ya I am here!" Turns out he and his brother were living in these bushes and were homeless. This is a man named Sonny. He was indeed hungry and thirsty. We gave him food and drink and some shirts. He was very thankful. We all laughed because we were startled by finding someone in the bushes. God was for sure at work in this adventure of love.
Another funny thing happened as we were nearing the end of this adventure of love. We came across a guy named Bobby who we saw reading under an overpass. He was living under the overpass with a number of people. We gave him food, water, and some clothes. The funny part happens when we start handing him clothes. Turns out we had grabbed some of Lucas' clothes out of the back of the car while in this process. Lucas says" Hey I think those are my clothes from the back of my car." This is after Bobby has them in his hand. Lucas had just given him his Royals jersey....Lucas said" you can go ahead and have that" We were laughing as we were giving Bobby the clothes that were in the back of the car. Bobby was very thankful for what he had received. We asked Lucas if he had more stuff of his we could give away.(ha ha ha) We came across some other folks, and we were blessed by them as well. We all were jacked about our experience. I we really felt that we were blessed by this adventure of loving on the homeless.
Maybe you can join us next time? Harlan 6/2/09
